Qu tal Las Hamburguesas? Fast Food Burger Match, Colombia vs. USA

Editor's note: J. Kenji Alt is a serious, possibly crazy (in a good way) burger fiend, having attempted to make a Blumenburger and successfully eaten 12 burgers in eight hours . Now you can read his report about two of the most popular fast food burgers in Colombia and how they compare to their American counterparts. Learn more about Kenji in his Grilled interview or check out his blog, Goodeater.org . 20081023-colombiavsus-collage.jpg I was recently down in Colombia killing ducks and going to my fiances sisters wedding and took the opportunity to research a story for the Boston Globe on Colombian street food. Being the hardcore burgervore that I am, I also wanted to use the opportunity to do a comparison of Colombian burgers vs. American burgers. But knowing all too well that theres such a wide variance in opinion on what makes a great burger (and already holding a bias against your average Colombian restaurant burger because they almost always mix onions and spices into the meat—a big no-no for me), I was at a dilemma. Colombia doesnt have the types of restaurants or burger styles we consider normal in America. Theres no pubs serving 9-ounce flame-grilled patties, no ice-cream stands griddling up 4-ounce beach burgers, no diners steaming sliders. Instead, youve got big hacienda-esque restaurants with Italian-themed burgers with mozzarella and marinara, or small family-owned restaurants with menus consisting of arepas, mojarra, rice fried with soy sauce (arroz tai), alongside handmade meatloaf burgers. Im not saying I couldnt find good burgers amongst all the other incredible food Colombia has to offer; all Im saying is that I couldnt think of a good benchmark to compare them to the American burger experience.  read more »

Burger King Burger Shots

20081201-bkshots-sixpack-openside.jpg Over the weekend, while I was trying not to work, we at A Hamburger Today received this email from longtime reader and frequent commenter Phauxtoe: Hey, I got a bone to pick with you guys. Today (Friday) I stopped at Burger King to get a road coffee (nothing else). I saw an ad the menu for "BURGER SHOTS," with and without cheese. I guess they have moved into the slider market. Here is the problem: I read your site everyday or sowhy do I have to hear about this on the streets?  read more »

Celebrities Get Free Burgers with Burger King Crown Gold Card

bkcard.jpgIn a recent London Times interview, House star Hugh Laurie mentioned one perk of his celebrity status was his Burger King gold card, granting him a limitless supply of free burgers.

The kicker? Laurie didn't even own one! His mention of the card, however, has gotten Burger King a lot more attention than expected, and soon he'll be joining the other 11 celebrities who are BK Crown cardholders, which include Jay Leno, Jennifer Hudson, and George Lucas.  read more »

Burger King Employee Takes Bubble Bath in Store Sink

20080813-bk-bather.jpg

Sometimes we all get the urge to take a bubble bath on the job, but most of us hold back. Even if it's our birthday. Not so with Timothy Tackett, a Burger King employee (now former employee) in Xenia, Ohio, who celebrated by stripping down and hopping into the stainless steel sink usually meant for washing more work-related things. Like utensils.

Far from ashamed, the BK tub man posted the video online, as if Greene County health commissioner Mark McDonnell wouldn't find out and eventually fire him. When Burger King spokeswoman Denise Wilson commented on the situation, she clarified: "we have sanitized the sink and have disposed of all other kitchen tools and utensils that were used during the incident." Because customers probably don't want naked man germs mixing with spatulas meant for burger-flipping.  read more »

Fast Food Facts update

Ken at Fast Food Facts and the Fast Food News blog has updated the format of his online search output, to look like the familiar nutrition facts panel on packaged food. This allows readers to see the information in a format that many have already learned to absorb fairly quickly.

It is wrongly said, sometimes, that consumers know these nutrition facts well already, but simply lack the willpower to act on the information. I always learn new stuff from a good tool like this.  read more »

Burger King Agrees To Deal With Tomato Pickers

Burger King and a farmworker advocacy group plan have struck a deal to improve wages and conditions for tomato pickers in the state of Florida.

The deal ends weeks of dispute between the fast-food giant and the Coalition of Immokalee Workers.

Burger King agreed to pay $0.015 more per pound of tomatoes it purchases from Florida growers. That extra money, in turn, would be passed on to the workers. The Coalition would also be able to investigate claims of farmworker mistreatment.

The Coalition of Immokalee Workers believes the raise would nearly double what workers currently earn while picking.

Burger King to Offer Six Packs in the U.K.

20080522-bkuk.jpgA six pack of burgers, that is. Not content with offering the more well-heeled denizens of tony Knightsbridge London an £85 sterling Kobe burger, Burger King is offering the rest of the nation a chance at overindulgence in the caloric rather than the financial department. The 6 Pack is actually one large patty sandwiched between six mini buns all attached to each other. Although the buns are joined together, BK has attempted to allay the concerns raised by health advocacy groups who balk at the 6 Pack's 917 calories by claiming that it's designed to "tear and share." Of course the fact that BK is offering a meal deal that comes packaged with a single drink and an order of fries indicates that the chain is at least anticipating some people will make the 6 Pack a single-user product.  read more »
